How to Clean a Mink Coat

A mink coat can easily cost thousands of dollars. As it's a luxury item, it's important to take good care of your mink coat. If handled well, a mink coat can last for decades and even increase in value over time. During warm weather, you should properly store your mink coat, ensuring it is safe from extreme heat and humidity. Likewise, guard your mink against insects that may feed on it, such as moths. Be careful as you clean your mink coat. It is susceptible to damage if handled poorly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Run a dry rag over your mink coat. Smooth the rag in the direction of the furs' growth. Use firm, even pressure as you move the rag downward in smooth strokes. This will remove excess dirt or dust from the fur. Do not scrub the mink. If you use circular motions, it can break the individual hairs.

    • 2

Do not use any water during the cleaning process. While light moisture shouldn't negatively affect the mink, moderate to heavy wetness can deteriorate the coat. Water can also cause mink coats to mildew and rot.

    • 3

Cover your mink coat with a breathable garment bag when you're not wearing it.

    • 4

Take your mink coat to a furrier. These professionals specialize in cleaning real fur items. Furriers can treat and remove stains on your mink coat. They also perform maintenance cleaning. To keep your mink coat looking clean, have it professionally cleaned once per year. Though most furriers specialize solely in fur, some dry cleaners also feature furrier services.

    • 5

Have your mink coat conditioned and glazed annually. A professional furrier can perform these services for you. While an annual professional cleaning is still necessary, this service will hydrate and protect your mink coat. This yearly maintenance guards the mink against damage, greatly prolonging its life.

Store your mink coat in a cool environment. If it is exposed to extreme heat or humidity, it will be damaged. Many people store their mink coats with furriers during the warm summer months.
