1
Plan this water feature as close to the house and windows as possible so you can enjoy it year-round and so you will have easy access to an electrical outlet. Clear the ground of all vegetation and debris and make sure it is flat and smooth.
-
2
Begin by placing the larger rocks in a shape and size that you would like. Just don't make it too large, since you are not excavating the ground in order to hold the water.
Add another row of rocks on top of the first layer, placing this row over the spaces in between the rocks below it. Continue all the way around the base of rocks.
Repeat this step to a height of approximately 3 feet in the back of the water feature and graduating down to a height of approximately 2 feet in the front. This design can actually be turned in any direction in order to view the pond from the yard or from inside the home. Just make sure the back of the pond is facing toward the desired view.
Make sure the rocks are sitting steady and firm.
If needed, you can add fill dirt next to the outside of the rocks to hold them in place. -

3
Place the pond liner inside the rock area and press it as flat as possible across the bottom, folding the sides as you go to make sure the bottom is flat.
Bring the pond liner up the sides of the rocks and lay it between the top 2 layers of rocks with at least a foot of liner loose on the outside of the rocks.
Continue this step all the way around the rocks.
You should now have your liner held in place by the top layer of the rocks.
Make sure the rocks on the top layer are heavy enough to hold the liner in place. You can always replace some of the rocks with heavier ones. -
4
Place the submersible pump in the bottom of the pond against the rocks. Thread the electrical cord up and through the rocks at the top in the back, trying to keep the cord as discreet as possible.
Add enough water in the bottom of the pond to cover the pump.
Plug the pump into an outlet and make sure it is working properly and circulating the water. -
5
You can now finish filling the pond, making sure you don't fill above the pond liner.
Cut the excess liner back to the outside of the rocks.
Place potted plants on the top layer of rocks where desired.
Your new water feature is complete.
