How to Connect a VCR Player to Computer Speakers

If you have an old VCR and an old pair of computer speakers, you can hook them up to create a secondary movie viewing room. The connection is quite simple, though the sound will fall far short of an IMAX theater. All you really need is the right cable and you can get the speakers hooked to your VCR.

Things You'll Need

• RCA cable to 3.5 mm jack cable Powered computer speakers with internal amplification

Instructions

1. Purchase an RCA to 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) mini-jack cable or adapter. The VCR's audio outputs are RCA (left and right) and the input on your speakers is likely a 3.5 mm mini-jack.

2. Plug the corresponding left and right analog cables into your VCR. They should be color coded for convenience.

3. Plug the mini-jack into your computer speakers.

4. Connect the two speakers if they're not already connected.

5. Plug in the computer speakers and turn them on.

6. Turn the VCR on, put in a movie and test your sound.

Tips & Warnings

• The VCR's audio outputs are line level, meaning there is no amplification. For this reason, you'll need powered computer speakers to provide the amplification.
