Lay Glass Blocks

Laying glass block is much easier when you use a grid system kit that doesn't require mortar. It's quicker and less messy. The drawback is that this system requires support on all four sides, so glass block walls can't be built this way. But, if you're replacing a window or creating a decorative touch in an existing wall, use this method to lay glass blocks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the number of glass blocks you will need for the space. Glass blocks come in different sizes. If the blocks will not fit snugly, resize the space.

    • 2

Allow for the width of the space between each block that will later be filled with sealant, and add the 1/4- or 1/2-inch of space around the outer edges, depending on the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Test the glass blocks in the space to make sure they fit before proceeding.

    • 4

Attach the mounting channels to all four sides of the space with screws.

    • 5

Use the interlocking spacers that come with the kit to assemble the glass block.

    • 6

Caulk the joints and the edges with sealant. Use a product recommended by the manufacturer of the kit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If weight is an issue, use acrylic blocks. The screw heads may show through the glass block. Consider painting them.

  • Do not replace any load-bearing walls with glass block.
