This free pilgrim hat is a fast and fun project for a classroom or a kids' club. Most classrooms will already have the basic materials for this pilgrim hat. Depending on their age and small motor skills, most elementary students will be able to handle each step successfully. Very young kids may need help with measuring, cutting the small tabs and applying the glue correctly. This pilgrim hat can be completed as a nice afternoon art project or as a party activity.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yellow construction paper, 10-by-13 inches Ruler Stapler Scissors Pencil Lightweight cardboard Compass 2 pieces black construction paper, 10-by-13 inches Stick glue Gray construction paper, small amount
  1. Step 1

Cut two to three strips of yellow construction paper, 2 inches wide. The exact amount needed will depend on the child's head size.

  2. Step 2

Staple the strips together, end to end, to form a pilgrim hat band. Place the band around the child's head to measure for size. Remove the band and staple to form a ring. Cut the excess from the band.

  3. Step 3

Draw a 10-inch circle on the lightweight cardboard using a compass. This will be the pattern for the outer edge of your pilgrim hat brim. Making the pattern will allow you to quickly make multiple pilgrim hats. Cut the circle pattern out.

  4. Step 4

Trace the circle on a large 10-by-13 inch sheet of black construction paper. Cut out the circle.

  5. Step 5

Set the yellow hat band ring in the center of the black construction paper circle. Trace around the pilgrim hat band on the black circle.

  6. Step 6

Draw 1/2-inch tabs about 2 inches apart on the inner drawn ring on the black circle. Cut around the tabs and the inner circle of the pilgrim hat brim.

  7. Step 7

Press the tabs to one side of the brim. Set the pilgrim hat band in the center of the black circle brim. Apply stick glue to the tabs on the brim and press to the inside of the yellow hat band to attach.

  8. Step 8

Cut a 4-by-6-inch rectangle from the black construction paper for the pilgrim hat crown. Apply stick glue to one short end of the rectangle and glue to the inside of the hat band. The rectangle will stick up past the band by 4 inches. This rectangle is to give the idea of a hat crown. It does not go all the way around the hat, just 4 inches in the front.

  9. Step 9

Cut a 3-inch square from the gray construction paper. Draw and cut a 1-inch square in the center of the 3-inch gray square for the pilgrim hat band buckle.

  10. Step 10

Apply stick glue to one side of the buckle and attach it to the hat band below the hat crown.
