The fourth mode of the melodic minor scale is an important tool in the repertoire of many famous guitarists. Guitarists such as Mike Stern, Joe Satriani and Johnny Smith have all used this scale in some of their most famous recordings. Learning to play the fourth mode of the melodic minor scale will add a dimension to any guitarist's playing.

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

    Place your left index finger on the third fret of the fifth string. Pluck the the string.

  2. Step 2

    Place your left pinkie on the fifth fret of the fifth string. Play the note.

  3. Step 3

    Place your left index finger on the second fret of the fourth string. Play the note.

  4. Step 4

    Place your left ring finger on the fourth fret of the fourth string. Pluck the note.

  5. Step 5

    Place your left pinkie on the fifth fret of the fourth string. Play the note.

  6. Step 6

    Place your left index finger on the second fret of the third string. Pluck the string.

  7. Step 7

    Place your left middle finger on the third fret of the third string. Play the note.

  8. Step 8

    Place your left pinkie on the fifth fret of the third string. Pluck the string.

  9. Step 9
     

    Play all eight notes in a row to produce the C fourth mode melodic minor scale.

  10. Step 10

    Practice the fourth mode melodic minor scale in different keys along the fifth string. The first note of the scale is the root, which indicates the key.

Tips & Warnings
  • Curve your left fingers and keep them loose, allowing for better speed and accuracy when practicing.
