How to Design Your Own Kitchen Plans

Nothing is more personal and more particular to individual tastes than a kitchen. Use these steps to design the dream kitchen that fits you perfectly. You're almost cooking now. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make a rough shape. Think about the existing kitchen. Will you simply design a new one over the same footprint, or are you expanding the current kitchen into a larger space? Will you keep the plumbing as is, or do you need to move pipes and possibly wiring? The more you keep the main elements in place, the cheaper a new design will be; however, that doesn't mean it will be the best design. Get a rough shape in mind for your new kitchen, then continue with your research and design.

Check out books. Go to the library and get all the kitchen design, planning and remodeling books you can find. Spend some time there or at home looking at pictures and plans and remodeling ideas.

    • 3

List your ideal kitchen elements. From the books you've looked at and your own experience, make a list of what you really want in your kitchen. What matters to you and what doesn't? Do you need a really large pantry, but don't care about a double sink? Think about how you cook and use your kitchen.

Make sketches. Use your rough shape to start sketching in the different elements. Play around with different sketches, placing major elements (such as the appliances) in different areas, and using built-ins or free-standing furniture. Some kitchens include an island, some have a desk, some have open shelving, some have all closed-in cabinets.

Choose the sketch that best fits your ideal kitchen.

    • 6

Convert the sketch to a scale drawing in order to be able to use it in the remodeling process. You can do this yourself by taking careful measurements and converting the sketch to graph paper, or you can use a computer program. Your contractor or architect will have to look over your plans carefully before starting the remodel.
