How to Make Wood Columns
The wood column described here is a simple design and can be completed in less than an hour. The required supplies are minimal and inexpensive, although you will need access to power tools. These columns can be used indoors or outdoors, and can be painted or decorated any way you see fit once they are complete. The columns cannot, however, bear a great deal of weight, as they are primarily decorative.
Instructions

1
Cut the boards to the length you want your columns. For example, if you want 6-foot-tall columns, your boards will need to be 6 feet long.
-
2
Lay one board flat on your work surface. Spread wood glue along the 2-inch edge facing you.
-
-
3
Stand a second board up next to the first one. Attach the two boards with wood glue at a 90-degree angle. The wood glue will help hold the board in place while you adjust it to make sure it's straight.
-
4
Finish attaching the boards. Shoot a nail into the outside of the second board about every 12 inches.
-
5
Rotate the two boards so that the second board is laying flat on your work surface and the first board is standing up. The boards should create a backwards L.
-
6
Repeat steps 2 through 4 with the third board.
-
7
Rotate the column again so that the open side is facing you. Spread glue on the 2-inch edge of the third board that's facing you.
-
8
Place the fourth board up against the edge of the third board. It should fit snugly under the last 2 inches of the first board, which should now be on top. If the first and fourth boards do not line up, go back and check your angles. Every corner created should be a 90 degree angle.
-
9
Nail the bottom of the fourth board to the edge of the third board. Shoot nails down though first board into the edge of the fourth board.
-
10
Stand the column up and paint it with white primer. Once the primer dries, paint the column any color you want. Or, skip this step to preserve a wood finish.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not own a saw, you can usually have wood cut to length during the time of purchase if you buy it from a lumber yard.
If you have never used power tools before, use extreme caution. It may be best to have someone more experienced present to walk you through the process.
