How to Hook Up an Amp to a Computer

These instructions assume that you are using an amplifier designed for home audio, which will have a 12 V plug to provide the power needed. If you're using a car stereo amplifier, you'll need to get an AC/DC converter to power the amp or use another power solution. Refer to the specifications of your specific amp to determine how much power you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a 3.5 mm to RCA cable. This will allow you to connect the single Line Out on your sound card to the Line In on your amplifier.

    • 2

Connect the single mini-jack end of the cable to the sound card's output or computer's headphone jack.

    • 3

Connect both the left and right RCA cable ends into the amplifier's Line In connections.

    • 4

Connect your speakers to the amplifier using speaker cable. Use the appropriate output for the left and right speakers, and match the polarities on both the speakers and amplifier.

    • 5

Test out your new setup. Plug in the amp, turn on both the computer and amp and select an audio source. You'll now be able to send a line level signal from your computer to the amplifier where the amplifier will power it and drive the speakers. Give it a listen to see how it sounds, and adjust settings to your preference.
