How to Build a Wooden Magazine Rack
Building a wood magazine rack for your home can be completed in an afternoon. The project requires minimal supplies, and can be inexpensive if you already own the power tools. The magazine rack described in this article is designed to hang on the wall. Once it is built, you can paint or stain the rack to match any room.
Things You'll Need
- ½-inch plywood Saw Wood glue Nail gun Tape measure Pencil 12 finishing nails Drill Two screws
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a rectangle out of the plywood that is 10 by 12 inches. This will be the back board of your magazine rack.
-
2
Cut four strips of wood that are 2 inches high and 10 inches long. These strips will be the front and bottom of the magazine rack.
-
-
3
Cut two pieces of wood that are 4 inches across the top, 2 inches across the bottom and 8 inches high. These will create the sides of your magazine rack. Cut one side of each piece of wood at an angle, as the top of the wood will be wider than the bottom.
-
4
Lay the back board flat on your work surface so that one of the 10-inch sides is facing you.
-
5
Spread wood glue across the edge of one of your 10-inch strips of wood. Press the glued edge to the top of the back board so that the edge of the wood strip lines up with the bottom edge of the back board. The strip should stand perpendicular to the back board. The attached strip will be the bottom of the magazine rack.
-
6
Shoot nails through the back of the back board into the edge of the 2-inch strip.
-
7
Take one of your side pieces and place it on the backboard so that the straight 8-inch edge is flat against the back, and the 2-inch edge is flat against the bottom.
-
8
Shoot nails through the back into the edge of the side piece, and through the bottom into the bottom edge of the side piece.
-
9
Repeat steps 7 and 8 with the second side piece.
-
10
Take one of the three remaining 2-inch strips and line it up with the bottom front of the magazine rack. There should be no gaps or overlap at the bottom.
-
11
Attach the strip to the front of the magazine rack by hammering in two finish nails on either end of the board. Use small finishing nails so they will be visible.
-
12
Attach the second 2-inch strip with finishing nails 1 inch above the first strip. Attach the last 2-inch strip with finishing nails 1 inch above the second strip. When you are done, the bottom strip should line up with the bottom of the rack, the top strip should line up with the top of the side wall, and each strip should be 1 inch apart from each other.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a lot of magazines, you can make the rack 20 inches wide (instead of 10) so you can have two stacks of magazines in one rack.
This project is not safe for kids.
