How to Train Dogs to Use a Potty Pad

Potty pads are often used to train puppies, and also full-grown dogs who have trouble controlling their bladders due to old age or injury. Potty pads are scented with a chemical that makes your dog want to pee in one specific place, instead of wherever he pleases. The key is to move the pad closer and closer to the door, and eventually all the way outside, letting the dog know that she should do her business outdoors.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the pad in an area the dog will have access to all the time. Show the animal the pad, let him smell it and praise him every time he uses it. Choose a specific word or phrase to say when the puppy is using the pad; later, you can use this phrase to signal that it's time to go potty outside.

  2. Step 2

After the dog learns to pee only on the pad, start moving the potty pad every 3 to 4 days so that it is closer to the door. Be sure to show the dog the new location of the pad every time you move it, and keep praising her for using it.

  3. Step 3

Once the dog has gotten used to using the potty pad next to the door, move it outside. Take the puppy outside and show him the pad, use your signal word or phrase and praise him for using the pad. Since the pad is outside, the dog can't get to it on his own, so take him outside every 2 to 3 hours and encourage him to use it. If the dog whines at the door, begging to go outside, reward him with treats and lots of praise.

  4. Step 4

When the dog gets used to going outside, stop using the pads altogether. Instead, take her outside and say the signal phrase to let her know it's time to potty. When she does, make sure you reinforce the behavior with praise and treats, until she learns to do her business outside.

  5. Step 5

Be patient with your dog and expect accidents to happen. It takes time for puppies to be able to control their bladder, especially if they are young when you start to housebreak them. Only scold the dog if you catch him in the act of having an accident. If you punish him after the fact, he will only be confused.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some puppies shred potty pads; if your dog is doing so, there are plastic alternatives or brands that have thicker "shred-resistant" pads available. Read the directions on the package to find out how often you should change the pad. Pads that are left for too long will stop working.
