How to Test for Protein in Food

If you have a child who is interested in science (or even if she's not), determining if certain food products contain protein is a fun and educational project for the whole family. Actually, you can really make a game of it, by taking bets (not to promote gambling) on whether something in particular is made with protein. Once you have a bottle of something called Biuret Reagent Solution, your test can begin.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the food you'd like to test and remove just a small portion of it.

    • 2

Place it in a bowl with about a tablespoon of distilled water and crush with a fork (or spoon). You're trying to make an almost liquefied version of the food.

    • 3

Transfer the liquid into a test tube by using a eye dropper.

    • 4

Squeeze 3 to 4 drops of Biuret Reagent Solution, cover tube and shake.

    • 5

Wait for the color to change. If it turns either pink or purple, the food contains protein.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may also be fun to test the protein content in a variety of different juices. If you were to do so, you should still dilute the juice with some distilled water.
