How to Install a Dell Internal Modem
A modem is a device which turns digital data into analog signals that can be sent through telephone or cable lines in order to communicate with other remote computers. Modems come in internal and external forms: an internal modem is a device which must be physically plugged into a computer's motherboard, while an external modem has its own casing and connects to a computer through an ethernet cord.

1
Shut off your computer and unplug all cords from the back.
-
2
Open the side cover of the computer case with a screwdriver. Your Dell may have a quick release mechanism that does not require a screwdriver. If so, there will be plastic tabs that you must push up or down at the same time. The tabs on the back of the case will have arrows on them directing where they must be pushed to release the side cover.

3
Locate an empty PCI expansion slot. PCI slots are usually light colored, and horizontal when the computer tower is standing up. Most computer towers have at least three if not more PCI slots which are parallel to one another and spaced and equal distance apart.
-
4
Unscrew the slot cover at the back of the case. Each PCI slot has its own cover at the back of the computer that must be removed so that any device installed in the slot can be accessed with plugs. To unscrew the cover, remove a single screw just on the inside of the case.
-
5
Push the modem into the PCI slot. When installing the card, make sure it is lined up exactly and that you put even pressure on it when pushing it in the slot. It should pop in place, bringing the ports on the back of the modem in alignment with the space the slot cover used to occupy.
-
6
Install modem driver software. Your modem should have come with a software CD. If not, check Dell's website for driver support, or the website of your modem manufacturer. Restart your computer after driver installation is complete.
