Most churches do not have large budgets for decorating the nursery, so frugality is important. Start with clean, freshly painted walls. Choose a light, bright color such as a pale yellow, blue or green. Be sure to use a paint that is made for a child's area and is low on toxicity. You also want a washable paint, because children's fingers can be messy. One fun option is to paint a wall or door with chalkboard paint so that kids can draw freely, or so notes and reminders can be posted.

Choose a theme. Some wonderful themes for a church nursery might be lambs, Jesus' teachings or Noah's Ark.
On one large wall, draw Noah's wooden ark with his animals on-board. Then give the children paint and let them create their own mural. Let them add fluffy clouds, water and the sun. Don't forget the giraffes, monkeys, elephants and birds. If you are not able to outline the animals yourself, use stencils or even stick-on animals. -

Following the ark theme, find inexpensive animal-themed fabric to create fun curtains. Another easy option that requires no sewing is to find sheets in a Noah's Ark theme and run a rod through the top seam of the sheet for a quick curtain. The same sheets or fabric can be used to make a host of projects, and the little ones can assist. They will be so proud of their room. Try covering a wastepaper basket with the fabric or making chair cushions or big pillows to rest on.

Hang an animal mobile that the children have cut out of construction paper and painted. Add a few large plastic colored containers for toys and supplies.
