Your windshield wipers can easily be forgotten until you need them. On occasion, you should check to make sure your windshield wipers are in top operating condition. If part of your windshield wiper is broken, it is easiest to take the whole windshield wiper arm off to make repairs.

• Pliers Vise-grip

1. Check that the wiper blade is secure and attached to the windshield wiper structured bow; if not, buy a replacement wiper blade to install it on the windshield wiper structured bow. Time and weather can cause the rubber blade to become frayed and detached, and this can cause the blade to malfunction.

2. Connect the windshield wiper's structured bow to the windshield wiper arm.

3. Remove the windshield wiper arm by using pliers or a vise-grip to take off the single retaining nut that connects the windshield wiper arm just below the windshield. Pull off the arm.

Tips & Warnings

• Problems with the windshield wiper arm: The tension spring in the arm can become worn out and stop moving the windshield wiper back and forth. If this is the problem, purchase a new windshield wiper arm from your local auto store (make sure to have your car model and year ready for them). The retaining nut that holds the arm on the car can become loose over time . Fix this by putting the wiper in the standard down position, and then use your pliers or vise-grip to tighten the loose nut.
