FTP (file transfer protocol) is a method of transferring files between computers. An FTP server is a computer, usually a dedicated one, that users transfer files to and from. These are used to hold software for users to download, or by companies that need to receive large files that would clog up email. A commercial printer, for example, would use an FTP server, to handle large graphics files that are too large to be sent via email. Using a FTP site is reasonably easy, and usually requires only a one-time setup process.

Select any files that you wish to transfer from your computer to the FTP server. Most FTP software packages are "drag and drop," so you can simply move files from one window to another.

  4. Step 4

Likewise, you can select any files from the FTP server to download to your computer. It's the same process as posting files to the server, only in reverse.

Save the login information on any oft-used servers to avoid entering it every time you need to log on.

  6. Step 6

Exit the software when you're finished transferring your data to avoid any mistakes.
