A thermostat regulates the temperature of a specific system, such as a house, vehicle or nuclear power plant. The thermostat accomplishes the regulation by controlling the flow of heat through the system. Using a set point of a designated temperature, the thermostat determines when to release hot or cold air and how much is needed. There are many different types of thermostats and sensors employed to regulate temperatures.
In 1885 Honeywell invented the damper flapper, a thermostat used by coal furnaces. Honeywell thermostats are the leaders in thermostat technology. Honeywell is considered the industry standard and is known as one of the best on the market. The company's "The Round" T87 thermostat is in the Smithsonian.
