Things You'll Need:
- Regular-sized neckties
-
Step 1
Measure the distance between your toddler's shirt collar and waist. Subtract 1/2-inch or 1-inch from the total (you don't want the tie to go all the way to the waistline). You will use this length to determine how long the tie should be as you tie it on yourself. Do not try to tie the tie on your toddler. It could take several attempts and they might get bored and frustrated.
-
Step 2
Put the tie around your neck with the large end on your left side and the thin end on your right. Because you are going to double the knot in order to shorten the total length of the tie you need to allow most of the tie's length to hang from the left side. Take the longer thick end and cross it over the short thin end at a point a couple of inches below your collar.
-
Step 3
Loop the thick end around the thin end and bring it up and over the cross formed by the two parts of the tie, looping the thick end around the right side of the cross. Bring the thick end under the cross and up around the left side and over the top of the cross, which at this point should form a diamond with its point directed down.
-
Step 4
Repeat the process just described, looping the thick end around the diamond and thereby making it thicker. Wrap the thick end around the diamond from either the left or right side and then run the end over the top of the diamond from behind. Push the thick end through the front most layer of tie material and pull it through so that it hangs down from the knot.
-
Step 5
Pull the thick end while holding the thin end (now underneath the thick end). The result should be a very short tie with a thick knot. Compare the tie length to the measurement of your toddlers shirt front. If the tie is too long or short you will have to retie it, varying the length of the thin or thick end. Finally, try the tie on your toddler and adjust accordingly.
