How to Make Your Own Tie Rack

Tired of your ties slipping off coat hangers, hiding under jackets, or lying in a heap on the floor? If you have more than a few ties, a tie rack is definitely the way to go. A convenient homemade tie rack requires only a bit of basic woodwork.

Instructions

1. Choose a rectangular piece of wood 12 to 20 inches long (depending on how many ties you wish your rack to hold), 4 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. Sand it so that the edges are smooth.

2. Using a pencil, mark your peg holes at intervals of about 1 1/2 inches, including from the top and bottom. On a rack that is 1 foot tall, you can fit seven pegs on each side.

3. Drill your holes according to the pencil marks with a 1/4-inch-diameter drill bit. The holes need only be 1/2 inch deep, so make a mark on your drill bit 1/2 inch high to help measure the depth of each hole drilled.

4. Cut however many 3-inch-long wooden pegs you will need from a wooden dowel.

5. Apply glue to the insides of the peg holes and firmly fix the pegs into place. Allow them to dry.

6. If you would like to stain your tie rack a certain color, do so now.

7. Attach a coat hook to the center of the top of your tie rack by screwing it into the wood. To make this step easier you can drill the hole before before screwing in the coat hook. Your homemade tie rack is ready to be hung and laden with all your favorite ties.
