Fasten the ends of a long piece of rope to two sturdy objects so that the rope is taught. Two trees or rocks will do fine if they are stable. You can also use two buildings or fence posts. If the rope has any slack your tent will sag and hang low to the ground. If possible, find two objects that are a little taller than you so that you can stand up in your tent.

Cover the rope with a large, rectangular blanket. The blanket needs to be large enough to extend from the rope to the ground on both sides. A light colored blanket is a great option because it will reflect sunlight. Dark colors tend to reflect heat; a shade tent made from a dark blanket will quickly heat up beyond tolerable levels.

If you want more space and better air circulation consider tying pieces of rope to each corner of the blanket. This can be done by knotting the corners of the blanket and tying the ropes to the knots. Drive stakes at equal distances from each corner of the blanket and attach the ropes to the stakes. This will extend your tent and open the bottom up, providing more exits and more room for air movement.
