The time comes when every dog needs to go for a walk and you will then need a nice, strong leash. You could go down to PetSmart or your friendly neighborhood animal supply store and buy one, of course, but what is the fun in that? Making a dog collar leash is relatively easy and could be a fun family activity. The best sort of leash is both strong and good looking--this can be achieved by combining nylon rope and fabric into one excellent leash.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nylon rope Fabric Needle Thread Snap for the collar
  1. Step 1

Decide on the material that you wish to use. Once you decide on the material, you need to decide on both the width and length of the leash. Experts typically say that the leash needs to be cut between nine and 10 inches longer than the desired length.

  2. Step 2

Use nylon rope for a strong, good-looking leash. Cut two pieces of cloth fabric of any pattern that you like to match the length of the leash.

  3. Step 3

For the end of the leash that attaches to the dog's collar, take one end of the nylon and tie a loop that will then attach to the snap. For the end that you hold, take the other end of the nylon and tie a larger loop that is large enough to provide you with the ability to comfortably grip it.

  4. Step 4

Once the loops are in place, sew the cloth fabric you have selected over the nylon to create a nice looking leash. To do so you will take both pieces of fabric and place them on either side of the nylon rope from top to bottom. Press the pieces of fabric together and then sew the two pieces together.

  5. Step 5

Attach the bottom loop to the snap. You can find snaps at hardware stores and pet stores--or in the interest of recycling you can use snaps from previous leashes you may have owned. Metal snaps have two ends that click open. One end you will snap on to your dog's collar, the other you will snap around the end that you hold. Once the snap is in place the leash is ready for use!

Tips & Warnings
  • Test the leash in an enclosed area before taking the dog near a street. Toss a ball or some other object and allow the dog to pull on the leash to see if it holds. Fabric that can cover nylon would typically be cloth but just about anything will do. One fun activity for children would be to take them fabric shopping to pick out the best looking (at least in their eyes) leash!
  • Never make a homemade collar as they can irritate or harm your dog.
