How to Attach Shutters to Brick

Hold the shutter up to the window. You should pay particular attention to the reveal (the space between the edge of the window and the edge of the shutter). Use your pencil to mark where you want to install your fasteners, being sure to stay in line with the mortar joints. You'll need six holes for shutters over 55 inches and four for smaller shutters. Be aware of aesthetics here; you will be able to see the heads of the fasteners after installation. You also should mark where two corners of the shutter are placed against the brick so that you will be able to place it back where you have it now.

Make sure you are wearing your safety goggles and gloves. Now, lay down the shutter flat on a surface that you don't mind being marred by a drill bit, because the bit will go through and ruin that surface. Drill directly into each mark. Be aware of the angle of the drill, keeping it at a 90-degree angle to the shutter.

Hold the shutter back up to the window. Be sure to line it up with your corner marks on the wall. Hold the shutter against the wall and drill your holes into the mortar. It's helpful, and safer, to have someone help you hold the shutter for this step. Be sure to drill at least 3 1/2 inches into the wall in each hole so that your fastener doesn't bottom out.

Take the special fasteners that come with the shutters, and push them into the shutter. Then use your hammer to tap them gently into the holes. These fasteners are designed to hold the shutter tight to the wall and not work their way out.

Use your soft, clean cloth to wipe the shutter clear of debris and dust.
