For example, if you plan to take a drive to Savannah from your home in Atlanta. you have to find out if the speeding ticket you received during your last visit (a year ago) has been paid. If not, your license may have been suspended. Read on to see your options for checking the status of a Georgia driver's license.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Inquire about the status of your license by visiting the website for the DDS, more formally known as the Georgia Department of Driver Services or call them directly at (678) 413-8400, (678) 413-8500 or (678) 413-8600 when calling from out of state; or 1(866) 754-3687, when calling from within the state. You may also visit the nearest driver's license office in the city where you reside.

Order a three- or seven-year Georgia Driving History Report (MVR) from the DDS. Currently, the three-year history costs $6 and a seven-year history costs $8. This fee may be paid with cash, a credit card, a personal or business check, a money order or a cashier's check. You may order the MVR either online, in person or by mail. (See Resources below.)

  3. Step 3

You may also obtain your driver's license information from a third-party source, such as the dmv.org website (see Resources below). This site links directly to the DDS website when you click on the appropriate hyperlinks. According to the homepage, dmv.org is a privately owned website that is not owned or operated by any government agency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call or visit the Contact Center for the Georgia Department of Driver Services between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The contact numbers are listed in Step 1. DDS driver's license offices are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, with Tuesday being the busiest day. Hours vary by location. If you order your MVR online through the DDS website, you must first create a log in name and password. Once you pay the fee (using your credit card), you will be able to access your MVR for up to 30 days afterward. The online version is not a certified copy and cannot be certified once you print it out. You must use Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print your MVR. If you request an MVR for another individual through DDS, that person must sign the appropriate consent/authorization form(s) before the DDS will release their information to you. You will be asked to provide that person's full name, driver's license number and birth date as well.
