Polar fleece is soft, warm and washable. While polar fleece scarves are quite common, if you are looking for a new twist on this favorite, try knitting a polar fleece scarf. It does take some preparation to knit a scarf from polar fleece, but an evening is plenty of time to create enough polar fleece "yarn" for your project. Once you have made a large ball of fleece yarn, knitting it will go quickly and you will have a polar fleece scarf to wear and enjoy or give as a gift in just a few hours.

How to Knit a Scarf from Polar Fleece

  1. Step 1

Use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut long, narrow strips from your polar fleece. Cut strips the same width, but widths from approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch will work well for to knit a scarf from polar fleece. Cut with the grain of the fabric. The total amount of yardage required will depend upon how long and wide you want your final knit polar fleece scarf.

  2. Step 2

Knot strips together securely and roll all of your polar fleece strips into a ball as you would yarn. Wind the knots into the balls as you roll your newly created polar fleece yarn.

  3. Step 3

Cast on the desired number of stitches. A knit polar fleece scarf will be quite bulky, so it is unlikely that you will need to cast on more than 20-30 stitches. Knit all rows or choose a patterned stitch if you prefer. Keep in mind that there will be minimal stitch definition in a scarf knitted from polar fleece, so avoid anything but very simple patterns.

  4. Step 4

Knit to the desired length. It is better to err on the side of length and any scarf should be at least 5 feet to 6 feet long to allow for adequate warmth and make sure the scarf stays in place on the wearer's neck.

  5. Step 5

Bind off your stitches. Add polar fleece fringe to your knit polar fleece scarf if desired, using the same color or a contrasting one. Wash and dry flat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider using several colors of fleece for a fun scarf from polar fleece.
  • Always practice caution when using a rotary cutter.
