How to Use a Product Key to Install Windows XP
Windows XP is an operating system developed and distributed by the Microsoft Corporation. First released in 2001, it has become the choice of operating system for most PC users, having peaked at an 85% market share in 2006. At the moment, it is still reported to be used by well over half of all PC's internationally, due to the stability and ease-of-use it provides its users. Even after the release of its successor, Windows Vista, XP remains the popular choice due to increased compatibility with older programs. XP is also the first of the Microsoft OS line to introduce product activation to combat piracy. This article will guide you on how to correctly locate and enter your Windows XP product key during installation.

Turn on the computer and insert the Windows XP installation CD into your CD-Drive. A window will appear prompting you to install or repair Windows XP. Choose "install."

Follow the instructions on the next few screens. The installation will set up and gather information about your computer before installation begins. Confirm the current date and timezone for your area, license agreements and Internet preferences when prompted.

After the timezone confirmation, you will need to find the product key that came with your installation CD, located in the CD case package, either behind the disk holder or around the label of the box. It consists of 25 characters, broken up into five strings with five characters each.
A sample would look like this (not an actual product key): S8TR4-24JDE-8JABF-UHWP2-98UBS -

Write down this key and save for future use. Enter the product key as exactly shown on the packaging or what you have written down when prompted to on the installation screen, without the dashes. There will be five text boxes for you to enter each part of the key into. Press Next when completed, and continue with the installation until you are done.

If your installation key is rejected, it may mean your product key has become invalidated or you have entered it wrong. Re-enter it again. If it still rejects the key you must contact Microsoft Customer Support through the number given to you on the product packaging.

Tips & Warnings
Setup usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer.
Make sure that you computer meets the minimum system requirements that Windows XP needs to operate. These requirements are available on your packaging.
There are many invalid and illegal unofficial product keys available. These "pirated" keys, if used, will invalidate your computer from receiving important updates and bug fixes from Microsoft, and render you unable to access their support programs. Be sure to use only valid product keys, such as those found in your purchased CD packaging.
Do not forget to activate your Windows XP operating system withing 30 days of installation. You will not be able to access it after that without activating.
