Growing up watching extreme sports, I thought who doesn't want to be a monster truck driver? It is an extremely entertaining and loved sport. The act of actually driving a monster truck is an absolute rush and at the professional status it provides a very nice income, but getting to that level takes time and money!

Things You'll Need:

  • Monster Truck Team Apprenticeship Mechanic Tools Good Driving Record MTRA Membership Commercial Driver's License
  1. Step 1

Get information on obtaining your CDL, Commercial Drivers License, from your local Department of Motor Vehicles and then take the CDL test and truck driver's exam and get your CDL.

  2. Step 2

Work for a monster truck team. Almost all monster truck racing teams require previous fabrication and mechanical knowledge of monster trucks. Call the monster truck team of your choice via this online directory: www.offroaders.com/directory/monster_trucks/Monster-Truck-Teams.htm
Tell them your interest in the sport and your interest in becoming an apprentice for their team. Most monster truck teams require you to have at least two years of experience with an apprenticeship. While working the apprenticeship, get out and network with other monster truck drivers and event promoters to get your name out there.

  3. Step 3

Become a member of the MTRA, Monster Truck Racing Association, by filling out and paying the application fee on www.mtra.us/images/2009MTRAMembershipApplication.pdf
Being an MTRA member will allow you to get exclusive updates related to monster truck racing and you need to be a MTRA member to race on the national level.

  4. Step 4

Search for monster truck driver openings through the MTRA website and forum http://forum.mtra.us/
After working an apprenticeship and networking for two years, it is much easier to find driver openings. There are 400+ monster trucks used in car smashing exhibitions and only about 100 monster racing positions. With a monster truck costing over $100,000 it is easier to work for a team and get a driver job, rather than buy your own truck and find your own sponsors.
