Things You'll Need:
- Scissors Comb

Step 1
Use the fine-toothed comb to remove all tangles after shampooing the hair. Untangled, combed hair makes parting much easier. If you're a first-timer and you're cutting curly hair, consider straightening the dampened hair before cutting it. Cutting curly hair takes more practice than cutting straightened hair. The waves in a curl can prevent an even trim.
-
Step 2
Section the hair by parting it in a line from front to back and from left to right. Make a top section from the two front quarter sections by parting the hair between the centerline part and the temples. Part the hair from the front hairline to the middle line, separating the front half of the hair from the back. Do the same on the other side. You should now have five sections.
-
Step 3
Using the comb, make a horizontal line across the top front section, stopping at the parts separating the top section from the two side sections. This first part can vary depending on the person holding the scissors, but this is the best start for beginners. Because layers can be complex, you can do the sectioning more than once to attain an even part.
-
Step 4
After you've made the part, use the comb to pull the hair at an angle of 90 to 95 degrees. This way, the trimmed hair will fall naturally in front of the eyes and won't mix with the hair that has yet to be cut. Now use two fingers, preferably the middle and index, and clamp down on the ends, removing the comb.
-
Step 5
Trim the ends right above the two fingers. The fingers serve not only as a clamp, but also as a ruler. Cutting hair without the help of two fingers will result in a messier trim, ultimately making the cut appear less professional.
-
Step 6
Use the trimmed first section as a guide for the other layers. For example, after parting the sides, measure them with the first cut to create the second layer. The bottom layers should be around three times longer than the top to create a stylish look. Comb the hair down and check for unevenness all around the head. If you find any, trim again, using your fingers as a ruler to trim edges evenly.
