How to Professionally Edge a Lawn
Grass likes to spread out and grow wherever it can. Its underground runners will creep into your garden beds and onto your paths. Taking the time to edge your lawn will create a clean crisp edge and give your lawn a professional look. - Half moon lawn edger tool or Sharp garden spade or Rotary lawn edger or Gas powered lawn edger

A half moon edger and a garden spade are both used to slice through the ground using the weight of the operator. Insert the blade of the edger or spade between the lawn and the edge of the pavement or garden bed. Step on the foot press of the tool and drive the blade into the ground.

A rotary edger is a star shaped device that you roll along the edge of your lawn to create a defined edge. Roll the rotary edger back and forth along the dividing line between your lawn and the pavement or garden bed. Use a slight downward pressure so the blades of the rotary edger sever the runners trying to extend the lawn outward.

A gas powered edger uses a set of rotary blades to cut an edge on your lawn. These are available to rent at rental centers or home improvement centers. Most models resemble small power lawn mowers. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions before using a gas powered edger.

Create a well-defined edge. Use the edger of your choice and drive it into the edge of the lawn right next to the pavement or garden bed.

Repeat. Drive the edger into the ground again, about 2 to 3 inches away from the first edge, creating parallel lines at the edge of the lawn, about 2 to 3 inches apart.

Remove severed grass from between the two cut lines. This will leave a distinct edge on your lawn and will make it more difficult for the grass to overgrow and move into the garden beds or over the edge of pavement.

Tips & Warnings
To delay the lawn from overgrowing the newly created edge, put down about an inch of sand in the area between the two cut lines, if desired. To create a well-defined lawn edge, insert the lawn edging material of your choice in the area between the two "cuts" in the edge of your lawn.
Always wear adequate footwear when using lawn and garden tools.
