Be alert for the signs of a spyware infection. These include an unwanted toolbar appearing on your browser, a change in your browser home page, excessive pop-up ads and overall slowed performance.
-
2
Install an anti-spyware program. There are many programs available for purchase, but you can also download a powerful free program called Spybot Search and Destroy. You'll find a link in the Resources section.

If spyware is detected, select the anti-spyware program's option to clean or remove it. Virtually all programs can perform an automated removal of the most common types of spyware.

When the removal process is complete, run the anti-spyware program again. This will ensure that the spyware has been removed entirely.

Tips & Warnings
Once you have removed any spyware from your computer, make sure that your anti-spyware program is always running in the background. This will prevent future infections. Never download anything from questionable websites because they may stealthily download spyware.
You may have an antivirus program installed on your computer, but that doesn't necessarily protect you from spyware. You should always have a dedicated anti-spyware program running at all times, in addition to your regular antivirus protection.
