How to Make Tally Cards

Tally cards are useful to keep score or count of things. Tally cards can be constructed for games, projects, or any time you need to keep track of how frequently something occurs. If you construct your tally cards properly, all you have to do to use it is make tick marks in the appropriate positions.

Instructions

    • 1

Title and date your tally card. This is important if the tally card is going to be used as a record, or if you use them a lot and will have several of them.

    • 2

Determine how many columns you will need, and make them by drawing lines straight up and down at evenly spaced intervals. The number of columns you will need depends on the number of categories you have. If you are just keeping a single score or determining how frequently something occurs, you will need a single column in addition to the first one. If you wish to keep track of how many times something occurs within several categories (for instance, tallying up how many hits, strikes, and walks a batter has during a baseball game) then you will need as many columns as you have categories, plus one.

    • 3

Determine how many rows you will need. This depends on the number of individuals for which you are keeping score. Draw horizontal lines for each row you will need, which will create boxes on the tally sheet.

    • 4

Title the columns. In many instances (games, for example), the title of the first column will be 'name.' At the top of each subsequent column, write down what it is you are keeping track of (hits, strikes, and walks in the previous example).

    • 5

Title your rows with the names of the individuals for whom you are recording data. In our baseball example, each row will begin with a person's name.

    • 6

Record your data. You can do this by making a tick mark in the appropriate row and column combination.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add an extra column at the end of the tally sheet to include the written total of the number of tick marks in each row.
