How to Transfer a Western Union Money Order
Western Union is a company with a 150-year history. It enables you to, as its advertisements state, send money nearly anywhere in the world. Whether your child in college needs immediate cash for food or books, or you want to send some funds to your husband overseas, there's a way to provide money to those in need almost immediately.

1
Find a Western Union agent near you. You're likely to find one in your local grocery store. Go to the official website for Western Union (see Resources below). Click the "Find a Location" button on the main page, and it will lead you to a search. You can get a list or a map. Enter in your address, and you'll be provided with many centers in your local area.
-
2
Bring cash with you to obtain your Western Union money order. Get it in the amount needed immediately. If your student needs cash immediately--yet will need more money in a couple of weeks--it's best to only send the emergency funds up front. Put the rest in a money order or check that is sent through regular postal mail. That will save you money in the long run.

3
Fill out the form for the transfer. You'll need to fill in your name, address, phone number and other personal information. Bring your driver's license with you for identification. You'll also need basic information about the money order recipient, typically the recipient's full name, location and address.
-
4
Give the funds--plus the fees--to the cashier. Always pay cash for a money order. The fees differ, depending on the amount of money being sent. The more money sent, the higher the fee. It's typically between 10 to 20 percent of the transaction, usually closer to 10 percent.
-
5
Obtain a serial money order number for the transaction. This will enable tracking and pick up for the funds. Let the recipient know the serial number for the transfer; he'll need to bring a legitimate photo ID to collect the money.
-
6
Go to the official website for Western Union. Download the consumer affidavit and company purchaser form. You can find out the status on the money order transfer any time at the website.

Tips & Warnings
Pay your bills with Western Union money order payments if you have problems with ChexSystems or do not have a checking account for another reason. They function in much the same way as checks, and you can pay bills or make other purchases with them. You can do this at the same center where you transfer the money order funds. For additional information about a money order you've purchased, call (800) 999-9660.
Don't send money through Western Union within the country if you have a week to spare. A Western Union transfer is much more costly than simply sending a check in the mail.
