  1. Laying Patio Blocks

    • 1

Make sure your patio base material is level and well compacted. The key to a good patio is a flat, hard base layer. If the base is uneven your patio will be as well. If you find any problems with the base correct them before laying any patio blocks. Trying to correct problems with the base as you go is extremely difficult and will probably result in an uneven surface. Make sure the base layer has been tamped with a professional tamper. Laying blocks on soft material will lead to settling and large dips in your patio.

    • 2

Begin laying blocks in a corner of the patio frame. Blocks need to sit level or flush with the edge of the frame. If blocks stick up above the edge of the frame people might trip on them and the patio will look unprofessional. If they sit below the edge of the frame the patio will appear to be sinking.

    • 3

Lay blocks in one column or row at a time, constantly testing for levelness. Fit blocks snuggly against each other; any separation between the blocks will result in unevenness throughout the patio. If a block appears to wobble it is because the base material is not level. Determine the high or low point that is causing the problem and either remove or add sand so that the block sits snugly on the ground without any movement.

    • 4

When you have finished the patio fill in the cracks with sand. This helps to prevent plants from growing in between the blocks. If you want to grow specific plants in the cracks between the blocks fill them with topsoil and plant whatever you desire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear gloves when laying blocks

  • Never lay blocks unless the base layer is flat and level
