1
Lay the piece of carpet so that the finished edge is tight to a corner.
-
2
Wedge the side that needs to be cut into the edge where the wall meets the floor using the wide putty knife. Kneel on the carpet so it doesn't shift.

3
Cut off the excess carpet above the putty knife using the utility knife and working away from your body. Work your way around the two sides of the room where the carpet overlaps the wall until the carpet is cut and fits the floor tightly.
-
4
Fold back the carpet so that half of the floor is exposed.
-
5
Apply the carpet adhesive to the outside perimeter of the floor according to the manufacturer's directions, covering an area 1-foot wide.
-
6
Roll the folded carpet back and press it firmly onto the glue covered area, smoothing out any wrinkles and ensuring it is tight to the corners.
-
7
Pull the second half of the carpet back until it covers the finished side and you can see where you applied the first glue; repeat the gluing and smoothing process with the second half of the floor.
