Adobe Flash plugins are part of a media software platform used to deliver a website's multimedia content to Internet browsers. Flash is generally used for short animations, website elements, commercial advertisements and videos. Many web-based applications also rely on Flash to function. Browsers without the Flash plugin installed are unable to access or view any of these Flash elements. Learn how to install a Flash plugin in Internet Explorer 6 (the browser in the Microsoft Windows operating system) to take advantage of the Flash multimedia platform.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Directions

  1. Step 1

Check that your computer meets the system requirements for the Flash browser plugin. On a Windows PC, Adobe Flash requires a computer with a Intel Pentium II 450mhz processor or faster. On a Mac computer, the Flash plugin requires either a PowerPC G3 500mhz processor (or faster), or an Intel Core Duo 1.33ghz (or faster) processor. Both Macs and PCs must have at least 128mb of random access memory (RAM).

  2. Step 2

Download the Flash installation plugin for Internet Explorer 6 by visiting Adobe's installation page for Flash (link in the Resources section). You must agree to Adobe's terms of service. After you've read the terms, click the button that reads "Agree and install now."

  3. Step 3

Wait for the plugin file to download onto your local hard drive. The download process may take several minutes, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

  4. Step 4

Close and quit the Internet Explorer 6 program. The Flash plugin cannot be installed if the browser is active and running in the background.

  5. Step 5

Double-click the installation file to open the plugin software and initiate the installation process. The installation is automated. Follow the installation prompts as the software guides you through installing Flash in your browser. Do not close the dialog box until the installation process is complete.

  6. Step 6

Click the Start menu and select "Restart" to reboot your computer.

  7. Step 7

Open Internet Explorer 6. The Flash plugin installation file will direct you to a test page on the Adobe website that displays a short Flash animation. Wait for the Flash animation to load to test that the Flash plugin has been successfully installed in Internet Explorer.

Tips & Warnings
