In a recession, many homeowners become concerned about their safety. Some often decide to buy guns as their last line of home defense. However, deciding on which gun is best can sometimes be difficult. Following this checklist should help in this decision.

    Weighing the Options

  1. Step 1

Where do you live? Important things to keep in mind are the size of your home and where it is located in reference to other homes. Is your weapon sized properly to maneuver it through your halls? Does it have enough power to stop an intruder without bullets going through your wall and into your neighbor's home?

  2. Step 2

Once you've gained a better understanding of your home, it's time to survey the available field of firearms. No one should buy before they try, especially those without experience. Gun stores often have firing ranges attached to them and will rent a variety of guns to those who want to see what they are most comfortable shooting.

  3. Step 3

Once you've tried a variety of firearms and made your decision, it's time to review your local and state ordinances. Police stations are the best places to ask questions that you, as an armed homeowner, need to know. Do I have to register my gun? Do I need a permit? Do I have to keep a trigger lock on my firearm? Make sure that you're not violating any laws while trying to protect yourself.

  4. Step 4

Lastly, consider the price. Firearms aren't cheap, and you will get what you pay for. Brand and type are up to the individual homeowner, but protecting yourself with a bargain firearm is the same as buying a bargain security system. The upfront price might be lower, but will it work when you really need it to?

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that if you are using a firearm for home protection that you inform all household members of this decision. Always be safe and careful that while a firearm may be ready, it is always treated with respect and caution.
