How to Replace Vanity Countertops

You're remodeling the bathroom and are ready to attack the sink and plumbing. Although it rates close to the toilet when it comes to dreaded replacement chores, it's not too tough to replace the vanity countertop. Gather some tools and roll up your sleeves, and before you know it you'll have this project finished.

Things You'll Need

• Utility knife Small pipe wrench Bucket Screwdriver Tub and tile caulk

Installation

1. Cut the line of caulk that seals the countertop to the wall; this may run around the perimeter where the countertop meets the vanity as well. Be careful not to cut or gouge the wall.

2. Turn off the water source by turning the shutoff valves beneath the sink. There will be a handle on each side, near the floor of the vanity and directly beneath the hot and cold faucets.

3. Open the faucets to allow the remaining water to drain from the hot and cold water lines.

4. Place a bucket under the drain pipe and, using the pipe wrench, disconnect the main drain below the sink. Any water remaining in the pipe will fall into the bucket, saving you a bit of cleanup time.

5. Grasp the countertop on two sides and rock it gently. It should move freely. If you meet with resistance, look beneath the countertop inside the vanity. There will be two or more brackets holding the top to the base; remove the screws that go into the vanity.

6. Lift the countertop straight up to avoid damage to the sink.

7. Install the new vanity countertop by reversing the previous steps, running a fresh bead of caulk around the perimeter where the counter meets the wall.

Tips & Warnings

• If your sink is not built into your countertop, you will need to caulk the new sink when you install it.
