Instructions

  1. Installation

    • 1

Exit all currently active applications and shut down the computer. Unplug the power cord; disconnect the cord from the computer. Power down and disconnect any connected peripheral devices. Unplug any remaining cables.

    • 2

Lower the computer onto its side, such that the arrow on the bottom is facing up. Locate the release button on the right side of the computer, near the back panel. Press and hold the button while lifting the right panel; repeat this procedure on the left side of the computer. Open the computer cover, using your hand to prevent the computer from lifting off the work surface.

    • 3

Locate the memory module connectors; if you are looking into the computer with the back panel directly in front of you, the connectors will be on the right side of the system board.

    • 4

Determine the correct configuration for your memory modules. The RIMM 1 and RIMM 2 connectors must always have a pair of matching memory modules installed. The RIMM 3 and RIMM 4 connectors must have either a pair of matching memory modules or a pair of continuity modules installed in order to complete the circuit.

    • 5

Remove the existing memory modules, if necessary. Locate the clips at each end of the module and press outward; the module will pop out of its connector. Remove the module and set aside.

    • 6

Prepare the memory connectors for installation by ensuring that the clips on each end are pressed outward. Align the notch in the new memory module with the crossbar in the memory connector. Slide the module into the connector and press down until the clips snap into place. Repeat as necessary.

    • 7

Lower the computer cover and press down until it clicks into place. Restore the computer to an upright position. Reconnect all previously connected cables and peripherals. Plug the power cord into an available electrical outlet and connect to the computer. The computer is now ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase memory modules directly from the Dell online store (see Resources below). If replacing old modules, store them in the same anti-static packaging your new modules came in. Minimize the risk of static discharge by periodically touching one of the metal surfaces on the back of your computer.

  • Avoid touching the copper contacts on the memory modules during installation; always handle by the plastic edges.
