How to Make a Free Logo

Hiring a professional to design your logo can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making it a difficult service for a small business owner to budget for. Designing your own logo will save you the expense and give you a chance to really think about what your company is all about. Your logo will be at the center of your company's brand identity for decades to come, so it can be very rewarding to design it personally.

Instructions

    • 1

Come up with a list of concepts you want to communicate. What are you selling and who are you selling it to? Do you want it to look homey, family-friendly, risky, old, young, traditional or futuristic?

    • 2

Download and install some free fonts from a website such as the one in the Resources section. Try them out in different sizes, in italics and bold, and underlined. Print out any letter forms that inspire you.

    • 3

Look at public domain art for ideas. You can create designs inspired by a public domain image, or incorporate it wholesale in your logo.

    • 4

Lightly sketch out your logo in pencil. Incorporate an image that exemplifies your company. Use a font that represents your brand's personality, if you're using your company's name in the logo. A logo can be an image only, an image with words or just a word.

Carefully trace over the pencil design in black marker and scan the logo into your computer. Import it into an image editor program and color it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use only one or two colors, or leave the image in black and white. In general, simple color schemes make a more powerful impression.
