Installing shutters to your house can add great curb appeal. Here are a few tips when that will help you when installing shutters.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • drill
  • screws
  1. Step 1

    • Layout your shutters in the proper pairs by the window they will be going on. Hold them up to the window to be sure that you like their look.

  2. Step 2

    • If you are installing vinyl shutters on top of vinyl siding, shutter-loks can used as the primary fastener. Place the shutter next to the window in the desired spot and mark the location each shutter-lok will go (one in each corner). The shutter-loks should be placed in a location where the siding touches the shutter. Drill a hole through the shutter and siding in each spot. Be sure to use the proper sized drill bit.

  3. Step 3

    • The shutter-lok then pushes through the hole for easy attachment.

  4. Step 4

    • When finished the Shutter-Loks are designed to add a decorative addition to shutters. Thus, for the best look they should be placed in a consistent location on the shutters.

  5. Step 5

    • When installing homemade wood shutters 3 inch galvanized screws can be used. You must place the screw in a spot where there is wood behind the siding (Plywood or a stud). If all of the outer walls of the house are covered in plywood then the screws can be placed anywhere. If the house is covered in foam, a stud can be found by the windows outer edge. Shorter screw can then be placed on the outer edges of the shutter that anchor into the vinyl siding.

  6. Step 6

    • When installing homemade wood shutters on brick the same 3 inch screws can be used. Hold the shutter in position and drill the holes in a spot that hits a mortar joint. Place a plastic screw anchor into each hole in the mortar. Then screw into the anchor.

  7. Step 7

    • Wood filler and paint can be used to cover the screw holes.
