The National Do Not Call List may be used to register your cell phone number and prevent it from being used for cell phone telemarketing. There is some misinformation being sent by email about the Do Not Call register and a reported cut-off date for a cell phone do not call list, so please read on for up-to-date information about the National Do Not Call List.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The National Do Not Call List prevents cell phone telemarketing and land-line telemarketing, in terms of products and services that you did not request information about. The Federal Trade Commission allows you add phone number to the Federal Do Not Call List by calling 1-888-382-1222. You can also visit the National Do Not Call Register online at DoNotCall.gov.

  2. Step 2

Per FCC regulations, cell phone telemarketing is already prohibited for numbers that are not on the Do Not Call Register, but it certainly does not hurt to add your cell phone number for your own peace of mind. However, there is no deadline for the National Do Not Call List, despite what you may have read in an email or online. Additionally, there is only one Federal Do Not Call List. A dedicated cell phone Do Not Call List does not exist at this time

  3. Step 3
    Federal Do Not Call List

    Federal Do Not Call List

Once your cell phone Do Not Call List information has been logged for over 31 days, you may file a complaint if you continue to receive, or begin receiving, cell phone telemarketing calls. It’s important to remember that even for a phone number on the Do Not Call Register, companies that you do business with may continue to contact you. Charities, political organizations, and telephone surveyors are also exempt from the National Do Not Call List.

Tips & Warnings
  • It’s important that for every owned cell phone, Do Not Call List information is registered. Sharing the same calling plan does not protect a cell phone not on the Do Not Call Register unless the individual phone number has been added.
  • Be careful about giving out your cell phone number, even if it’s on the Federal Do Not Call List. Any company that you voluntarily offer your cell phone number to has the right to contact you, particularly if you are doing business with the company in some way.
  • Do not trust any website that claims to be a specific cell phone Do Not Call List. Only the website (DoNotCall.gov) and telephone number (1-888-382-1222) from the Federal Trade Commission are valid ways to add your phone number to the Do Not Call Register.
