Step 1
If a mechanic tells you that you need something done, and you are not positive they are being honest, get and estimate, and get a second opinion if possible.
-
Step 2
Find out what parts you will need for your car, and call a local auto parts store to find out what they cost. Do not get talked into buying a part for more than what you can pick it up at the auto parts store. A part is a part. If you have to, buy the part and take it to your mechanic to save a few dollars.
-
Step 3
Parts like alternators can be rebuilt, so when your mechanic takes it out, take it to the auto parts store and get your refund back. This can save you $50 and more sometimes.
-
Step 4
Make sure you get a written estimate. Do not be afraid to ask. You are protecting yourself.
-
Step 5
Talk to the owner of the shop if possible. They will usually work with you more than a manager might.
-
Step 6
Talk to friends who got a good deal. Sometimes mechanics work on the side and charge a lot less.
-
Step 7
Make sure you get at least a limited warranty on parts. A year or more is good.
-
Step 8
Above all, trust your intuition. If you do not feel good about the mechanic, just leave if possible. Sometimes it is worth the tow to take your vehicle to someone you trust.
