How to Dye Dark Hair Lighter Without Bleach
For YEARS women have had dilemas of dying their hair....I am here to help!! Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Plastic Bowl/Dye Bottle
- Dye Brush (for bowl)
- Plastic gloves
- L'Oreal FOR DARK HAIR ONLY DYE
- 40 Volume Developer (I prefer Salon Care)

First of all....you need to know what color you are trying to get to. I am naturally a Dark Brown color, but my FAVORITE COLOR is Fire Engine Red. This is an IMPOSSIBLE color to achieve unless I bleach my entire head first, which causes MAJOR DAMAGE!!!

Step One is basically going to Sally's Beauty Supply or whatever beauty supply store is in your area and checking out the L'oreal FOR DARK HAIR ONLY section. These colors are designed for people with darker hair. If you have virgin hair, you have a better shot at getting your desired color.

Step Two is the actual process of dying your hair. I highly recommend having someone help you with this if you are not used to doing this alone. I have been doing this myself for 11 years and its still difficult for me to do alone. Not to mention VERY messy!

All you do is mix equal amounts of the hair dye (which comes in a tube) and 40 vol. developer. If you are using a bowl, make sure you mix the two very well and their are no lumps. If you are using a bottle, make sure you shake well so it is well mixed.

When applying the mixture to the hair, Start in the back at the nape of your neck where the hair is the darkest. If you have virgin hair (never been dyed)the hair will all come out one color so it doesnt matter if you do your roots first or last or all at one time. But if you have hair that has been processed many times or even one time before this, you will want to do the roots last and only leave the color on for 10 min.

The box will tell you how long to leave the color on for, I usually do 45 min. Always remember, once the color gets to the highest level it can get to, the process will stop so you dont need to worry about over processing. I dont recommend leaving it in any longer than an hour though.

When rinsing the hair, I recommend doing it in the shower if you are by yourself. Using a sink gets pretty messy. Make sure that you use tepid or luke warm water. After the water is running clear, you can shampoo and conditioning is a DEFINITE YES!!! When you wash out the conditioner, use cold water, or as cold as you can stand. It will slam shut the pores in your hair and seal in the color. Always use cold water at the end of your conditioning to keep color a little longer, hot water will just help the fading.

Now, with my hair, my roots are MUCH more the color I want because of how much I have dyed my hair in the past. Once the dyed part grows out, all of the hair will be one color so don't panic.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to use gloves
If you have dye on your skin, do NOT rinse off with water, when you are rinsing your hair, rub the color on your skin with the hair dye mixed with water from your hair.....color removes color.
I do NOT know how well this product works with the blonde colors, only the red's
Be sure to do a blotch test 24 hrs. prior to using ANY product on your head that you have never used.
Never save hair dye after you have used some. It will oxidize and be no good after the initial use.

will yer hair not go orange? I have really dark blonde hair and I want it like light blonde, without bleaching it, and ive never dyed my hair.. can anyone help?:o

Do you just mix peroxide into the colour dye you bought? Like as an extra?

My hair is naturally mid-dark brown but I usually dye it fiery vibrant red. I do this without bleach, there's no way I go near the stuff! To achieve this, find a platinum blonde shade (I used garnier nutrisse natural blonde) Obviously your hair wont go as blonde as on the packet but will transform dark brown to a nice caramel colour. I do not reccomend to dye your hair again straight away wait at least a month otherwise you will damage your hair. When you choose your red dye, do NOT choose a dark shade like cherry or burgundy, even if you are aiming for that look because it's likely you will go jet black not red. Instead choose a ginger shade (I chose Loreal intense mango copper) and the vibrant cherry red will be achieved without any bleach :) If you want non permanent dye, if you have dark hair choose NEON ORANGE not Red, as again the red will darken it. Also, the processing time is 30 mins, NOT 45! Using a 40 vol developer and processing for 45 mins is a recipe for extremely damaging disaster, especially if you have dyed your hair in the past!
