1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by the time they are 18 years old. 90% of assaults are by people that the victim knows, love, and may even trust. Many victims live in "secrecy" for a long period of time and some may disclose soon after the assault. Here are some ways to help someone who has been sexually assaulted.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

BELIEVE them. The greatest fear of the survivor is that they will not be believed. Accept what you hear without judgement. LISTEN & COMFORT them.

  2. Step 2

REINFORCE the assault was not their fault. Provide protection and suggest calling a rape crisis center. If the assault happened within 72 hours suggest medical attention.

  3. Step 3

HELP them organize their thoughts, but let them make decisions about how to proceed. Let them express their emotions and feelings. VALIDATE them and avoid telling them how they should feel.

  4. Step 4

Be available. Learn about rape trauma syndrome and get help for yourself if needed.
