The first thing I do to get ready to declutter my house is to get in the right mindset for it. It can be a huge task to take on so you need to prepare for it!

Determine which room you want to tackle first. Don't feel like you have to finish the entire house in one day. I couldn't declutter my house in one day no matter how badly I wanted to.

If you want help, see if a friend or relative will come over to help you. If you want to do it alone like I do (because only I know where I want stuff to go), that's perfectly okay too. Take a day all to yourself and get down to work.

To begin, gather the supplies that you'll need. When I declutter my house, I always grab garbage bags for sure, file folders for paperwork and 3 bins or boxes. Label one "Donations", one "For Keeps" and one "Garage Sale".

Go through your clutter and pick up one thing and then determine first whether it's garbage or not. If it isn't garbage, then you need to determine if you want to donate it, keep it or put it in a garage sale. Continue to do this for each item you pick up. Once you pick up an item, do not set it back down. Just keep plugging along with each item until they're all organized. This is my mantra when I declutter my house!

When you have finished putting all things in their respective "spot", set the boxes for donations and garage sale in the garage or storage closet. Get your donated items out of your house as soon as possible to give you more space.

Now go through the "For Keeps" bin and do the same thing you did in Step 3. Pick up each object one by one and determine a proper place for it. If it's something you haven't worn, used or seen in over a year, it's probably safe to get rid of it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If it's not impossible for me to declutter my house (I have 4 kids and 2 kids along with all their clutter), you can do it too!

  • Begin with one room. When one room is finished, continue on to the next room, etc.
