Things You'll Need:
- 3 cups of flour
- lard
- 1 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- rolling pin
-
Step 1
In a large bowl add your flour, salt and baking powder. Start adding your lard in, I always just add a spoonful at a time. Knead the dough with your hands until it is well blended. Then start adding your water little by little. Keep mixing the mixture with your hands until you have made it into a large ball. Then add a couple of pinches of flour to the outside of the ball.
-
Step 2
Cover your bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes.
-
Step 3
Make a ball in your hands of the tortilla mixture (depending on how big you want them) lay them on a flat surface and roll them with your rolling pin until they are flat.
-
Step 4
In a large frying pan (non stick) turn your stove on medium heat and cook the flour tortillas on both sides until they are light brown. If they start to bubble push down on them to make flat again.

on 9/15/2009 Keep the leftover tortillas in a tupperware or other bowl with a tight fitting lid, and then be stored in the refrigerator.

on 9/15/2009 Oh, I want to add to my note, I found that if I made the tortillas just a bit smaller I was able to get 14 tortillas out of the single batch of dough. I did not need to make a double batch to be able to make enough for my three member family.

on 9/15/2009 I just tried the Homemade Flour Tortilla recipe and it works! I however substituted Crisco Butter flavored shortening for the lard. I used just enough shortening to get the flour to stick together and slowly added the water and mixed using my hands until I had a dough that stuck together. Thank you.
