Why should you donate a car instead of selling it? For starters, donating your car is a really super way to contribute to society and help others in need. If that's not enough, you get to write off a bunch of money on your taxes when you donate a car!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Car
  • Good Will Toward Man
  1. Step 1

You can donate your car online to Habitat for Humanity, Jimmy Carter's awesome organization that is more than deserving of your old car. Donate a car to Habitat’s Cars for Homes™ car donation program and you'll be helping your local Habitat group build houses for families in need of decent, affordable shelter. This is a really awesome cause that I've been supporting for years, and if I had an extra car I would totally donate it to Habitat.

  2. Step 2

    HABITAT.ORG/CARSFORHOMES

Get on Habitat's website and fill out the online form to donate a car to Habitat. Give them the vehicle's year and your zip code and they'll tell you what your state requires of you to donate a car.

  3. Step 3

    EXPRESS PICKUP

Some vehicles can even be picked up expressly through the Express Pickup program. Check the box if you want in on this.

  4. Step 4

    VIN NUMBER

Enter the vehicle's VIN number. If you don't have it, what business do you have trying to donate a car without a VIN number? Go get the VIN number. Cars made after 1969 have the VIN on the drivers side dash. Just peek through the windshield and BAM! There's your VIN.

If you don't have the VIN number, you can slide on through by entering your vehicle's year, make and model. But I better never catch you around these parts without your VIN any more, ya hear?

  5. Step 5

    ALL DONE!

Actually you have to enter in a little more information about your car and how you want to go about donating it, but then after that I swear you're done. Now you're all ready to donate your car and get a sweet tax write-off, all the while helping people in need. If that don't make you feel good, I don't know what to tell you. See a doctor.

Tips & Warnings
  • For quicker results, donate a car today
  • Jimmy Carter likes to spend a week at your house before they let you donate a car to Habitat
  • He's a good guy, just don't feed him broccoli

on 2/25/2009 Great article. I just donated a car last year - went to the Humane Society but, the year before, I donated one to the Salvation Army so it works out in the end!
