1
Compliment your teen and tell her how proud of her you are regarding recent accomplishments or new hobbies she is involved with. Praising your teen will show her you are aware of what she is doing in life. Acknowledge your teen's good grades by taking your teen to dinner or by rewarding her with a specific gift or present.
-
2
Listen openly to your teen and avoid interrupting, getting angry or making accusations when your teenager is attempting to open up and talk with you. The more you listen, the more trust your relationship will develop -- making it easier for your teen to talk honestly and directly with you.

Make plans with your teen whenever possible to have an outing at a local museum, concert or shopping mall. Plan trips that are related to his hobbies (such as visiting an art or science museum, attending a sporting event or spending the day at an amusement park) to show you care and that you are involved and care about his interests.
-
4
Spend time with your teen at home when she asks you to and you are available. Watch a movie of her choice or introduce your own favorite movies or recipes to help bond and get to know one another on a deeper level. Allow her to share her favorite music artists, idols she looks up to and other cultural aspects of her life freely with you by keeping an open mind.
-
5
Tell your teen you love him and give him a hug when he is upset or excited. Although some teens will shy away from attention and affection, showing you care is important to allow him to know he has you to trust and to talk to in any situation.
