Things You'll Need:
- Dessert
- Sense of Humor
-
Step 1
If you are meeting your boyfriend's parents at their house or the home of another friend or relative, bring a dessert to share. Ask your boyfriend for advice on family favorites. If the dessert is shared during your visit, be sure to offer to help set up and clean-up. Your boyfriend's parents will be impressed and will probably yell at their son for not offering to do the same.
-
Step 2
If your boyfriend does not share a last name with his parents, make sure that you find out what it is and address them accordingly. Although this may seem a little old-fashioned (and you may be corrected), it's better to be overly formal than to offend someone.
-
Step 3
Be prepared to make polite conversation. You will most likely be drilled on your school/job, hobbies, and family. Pay close attention to your answers. If you think that your boyfriend's parents are judging you, they probably are.
-
Step 4
Although you will be concentrating on your answers, be sure to throw in some questions of your own. People enjoy talking about themselves and you may find that you share common interests. This gesture is sure to make you appear more lovable.
-
Step 5
During the never-ending interview that you are sure to endure, don't forget to score points with Dad. He can be a powerful ally.
-
Step 6
At the end of your visit, be sure to mention how much you've enjoyed your visit. Use points from the evening's conversation to make a suggestion for your next encounter.
-
Step 7
If you are the type of person that easily forgets, record some information that you learned about your boyfriend's parents. Be sure to mention it the next time you see them. This is especially important if they mention something major such as an upcoming trip or work-related milestone. They will love you for it.
