Things You'll Need:
- A roll of toilet paper
- Brush or comb
- Bowl or cup of water
- Towel
- Time
-
Step 1
PREPARE: The process will go fastest when you are prepared! Gather a cup or bowl of water, a roll of toilet paper, and a brush or a comb. You might want a handheld mirror so the person can see their hair as you're doing it! Then take the toilet paper (make sure you have good quality toilet paper that won't tear easily) and tear off two-square-long sheets (NOT 2 separate sheets...a sheet that is two-squares long). So, the sheets you're using will be in a rectangular shape. If, once you start, you find you want sheets that are shorter or longer, tear them off as you like!
-
Step 2
WET THE HAIR: Hair curls more easily and faster when it is wet! If you and the curl-ee agree, you can get their hair wet all at once. They could hop in a quick shower, or they could dunk their head in a bathroom sink. The other option is for you to wet their hair in sections before you curl it just using your hands and a cup of water. Lay a towel around their shoulders to protect their clothes. It is important that their hair is not too wet or damp because that will instantly soak into the toilet paper and break it. It just needs to be lightly damp (towel dry).
-
Step 3
START CURLING! As you go around their head, be sure to use only thin sections of hair - if the sections are too thick they will not be able to be tied up and possibly break the toilet paper...plus they will not curl as quickly or for as long of a time. So start either to the left or right of their face. Take a section from the top or bottom of their head (you can pin or tie off the rest of their hair as you go along) and take your rectangular-piece of toilet paper. Fold, roll, or scrunch the toilet paper so it's close to the dimensions of a pencil. Place it on or under the bottom of the strand of hair you are working with. Wrap the very bottom of the strand around the toilet paper and then roll it all up tightly to their skull. Then take both ends of the toilet paper, while holding it to secure that it doesn't unroll, and tie the ends together to create a knot. You probably won't be able to tie again but one tie is enough. Continue doing this all the way around their head! Having a row around their head at the top and a row around the bottom ensures a lot of curls but you can do as many or as few curls as you like!
-
Step 4
ALLOW TO SET: Decide if their hair needs a short or long time to curl, based on their hair texture. At least a couple of hours, if not overnight, is necessary. And spraying with hair spray will likely help the curls stay even longer!
-
Step 5
UNWRAP! Sometimes this part can be difficult because you're so eager to see the curls! But quickly and carefully break the toilet paper by pulling apart with your hands or you could very very carefully cut them. Then let the curls unroll and style as desired!
