Things You'll Need:
- Blonde hair dye with "ash" listed as the color type on the box.
-
Step 1
Have realistic expectations.
In the bleaching process, hair lightens through different shades, from black, to brown, to red, reddish orange, orange, yellow orange, yellow, blonde, and light blonde, finally to white. All hair lightens through this order of shades. Keep in mind if you have very dark hair, hair dye meant to lighten a few shades will not immediately reach a very light blonde color. Your dark hair will travel through that color spectrum. -
Step 2
Use "ash" hair bleach to avoid having overly red, orange, or gold tones in your final hair color.
Many hair colors result in dynamic and bright, bold blonds. If you want a cooler, more subtle look, use "ash" blonde colors. These colors counteract the gold tones and result in a more natural blonde look. -
Step 3
If you bleached your hair to a reddish orange, or brassy color and are going to lighten it further, consider using an ash color, instead of a bright blond color. Ash blonde color has undertones that balance out reddish, brassy, and gold shades. Ash hair colors are usually in conservative packaging aimed at slightly older women. They are not found in bright, flashy, bleach blonde packaging.
